Plant pathologist detects, identifies, controls, and eradicates plant pests and diseases. Plant pathologist should have a knowledge of: mycology, bacteriology, virology, zoology, nematology, weed control, taxonomy, physiology, morphology, anatomy, cytology, genetics, organic agriculture, and biochemistry as they relate to plants; taxonomy and economic significance of plant parasitic pests; principles and techniques used in identifying, evaluating, and controlling plant diseases and pests; various domestic and foreign literature sources pertaining to plant pathology and pest management; importance of plants to a stable ecology; agricultural, horticultural, and native plants from the cultural and botanical standpoint; relationship of plants, plant pests, and pest control to agriculture and the environment; laboratory techniques and methods.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Makes field and laboratory diagnoses of plant pests and pathological materials; conducts surveys; isolates and identifies pests and other organisms which cause diseases in plants; prepares, examines, and interprets histological specimens.
• Analyzes potential hazards to plant life and makes recommendations for solutions to problems; develops diagnostic resources. Field work, including the collection of plant material samples from a range of environments.
• Serves as staff consultant to provide expertise on phytopathological and pest problems; trains and advises co- workers.
• Use Integrated Pest Management Methods to prevent and/or to eradicate pests and diseases organically.
• Prepares news releases, bulletins, and other educational materials on methods to cope with plant diseases; maintains records and prepares reports.
• Monitoring or supervising laboratory research
• Conducting laboratory analysis of plant materiel samples and research experiments
• Completing paperwork and cataloguing findings
• Writing research reports and making presentations on findings, including scientific research papers and non-scientific client reports
• Interpreting science to inform policy
• Attending conferences to keep abreast of the latest developments and to network with people in the profession and in related industries
• In consultancy roles: tendering for work, reporting to and advising clients, liaising with members of related professions, such as ecologists, environmental scientists, engineers, geologists and hydrologists.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Engineer degree plant pathology
• 15+ years of relevant experience
• Experience in conducting fieldwork
• A Master's degree in organic agriculture is a plus. A Master degree can be substituted by an experience in organic agriculture.
PREFERRED SKILLS
• Excellent observation skills
• Ability to work in field
• Analytical, hardworking and persistent
• Good at interpreting scientific results and solving problems
• An eye for detail, accuracy and a methodical work manner is important
• Good communication skills and the interest to keep up-to-date with the industry’s latest developments
